About This Note Recognition Trainer

This free exercise trains you to identify single notes by ear. A note is played on piano (or the instrument of your choice) and you answer by name — a direct workout for pitch memory that supports everything else in musicianship, from tuning your instrument to transcribing melodies.

How to use it

Press play, listen carefully, and pick the note you heard. You can replay the note as many times as you like before answering, and instant feedback shows the correct answer whenever you miss. Settings let you choose the note-naming system (A–G, fixed Do, or movable Do), the instrument timbre, and the pitch range you practice in.

Level progression

You start simple, with just two well-separated notes. Every ten correct answers unlocks a new note, and after three mistakes the hardest note is temporarily removed so you can consolidate before moving on. Streak and accuracy counters keep your progress visible.

FAQ: Do I need perfect pitch for this?

No. Very few musicians have absolute pitch. This trainer builds practical pitch memory within a range, which — combined with relative-pitch skills like interval recognition — is what working musicians actually rely on.
